2. On Karmelicka Street, a child of about a year and a half is sitting on a small cushion. Sits quietly. At a distance stands a girl; it seems that she is the child’s guardian. Women and men pass by and none take any notice. None takes interest in Warsaw’s youngest beggar. A small beggar girl walks by with a piece of fish skin in her hand (smelt are still obtainable). She stops in front of the child, breaks off a bit of the fish, and pushes it into the child’s mouth. The child snaps it up greedily.

3. Walking from Orla Street along Zamenhofa Street, I came across some corpses covered with paper, one on Orla Street, the other on Karmelicka Street.

4.In the gateway of 38 Sienna Street there hangs the following notice of a youth circle, written in Polish: “The management of the youth circle calls on all members to cooperate closely in the anti-beggar campaign. Every member of the circle who encounters a beggar in the gateway or on the stairs is requested to inform them that alms are only given on Friday and that it is unnecessary for them to roam through the whole house. This request is also directed to the youth circle.
