Second stay in quarantine233 (Leszno Street 109)

We are finally in Jewish care. Though dead tired, people quicken their pace at the very thought. It seems the worst is over. We are beginning a new period of our odyssey, and now under the protection of Jewish Warsaw. This gives us some strength and consolation. The sight of a modern building emerging from the darkness lets us hope that there, behind that door, we will be welcomed with hospitality or at least with a kind word. They count us in the meantime and the symbolic number of 613 is the only thing our half-asleep consciousness registers.234 The door opens and we all rush in to find a place to sleep, as fast as possible. We walk down an endless labyrinth of corridors. We find a room but we cannot go to sleep in it because a loud grunt tells us: “It’s full. There’s room down the corridor.” We walk on, but our legs immediately start to give in. Exhausted by a whole day of travelling and the experiences of the past hours and days, we throw our bundles down onto the floor
