some time during the subsequent weeks and months. For now it is recommended for the campaign to at least continue on a regular and continuous basis, with increased quality of the food provided. Moreover, the campaign should spread in order to affect more and more starving inhabitants. For some reasons, just a few months ago physicians were reluctant to pronounce hunger oedema as a cause of death. But nowadays it has become an all-too-widespread phenomenon. This shows how rapid the advance of starvation is and how intensively we should try to fight it through improvement of the overall food supply in the district, irrespective of any short-term campaigns.
In the month of June 80 corpses were found on the streets (37 men, 38 women, and 5 children. During the same period there were 6 instances of suicide caused by poverty).

In June 191 people died in ŻTOS centres.

Important: as we have stressed, the above table and data reflect only the centres in the TOZ sanitary care. As not all centres are in its care, the numbers of deaths obviously vary. Hence, in June in the TOZ centres there were more than 400 deaths, while the number of deaths in all centres (ŻTOS and Jewish Council) nearly reached 500.
