[9] Refugees

In February 1941 the Jewish population was alarmed by the news about the deportation of Jews from the towns in the General Government. Transports of deportees soon followed that grievous news. Deportees were brought to the quarantine at Leszno Street 109 by train or truck.

Trucks spilling out crowds of people—men and women, old and young—pulled up in front of the quarantine day and night throughout February 1941.

In February we received 8,278 people (according to a report on the Care Section’s activity) from the following towns: Grodzisk Mazowiecki,269 Warka, Grójec, Białobrzegi, Góra Kalwaria, Mogielnica, Błędów,270 Tarczyn,271 and Głowno.272

[10] The society took care of those poor souls and their property. The Care Section was established for this very purpose. Its activity consisted in:

    1) unloading the transports, finding people proper accommodation, and putting their baggage delivered from the station in the storeroom;

    2) distribution of food—coffee, bread with marmalade, porridge for children, and soup—in the amount received from ŻTOS;

    3) provision of emergency medical assistance to the sick and the elderly and transporting them to hospitals as per doctor’s orders;

    4) accepting deposits of money and valuables for the duration of a shower;

    5) protection of both hand and bulky baggage. After it was segregated and labeled as food and other baggage, we assisted in [10] its disinfection and then we gave permission for it to be sent under our escort to storehouses in the Jewish district. The deportees could claim it from there after leaving the quarantine.
