The soup has already been distributed, but the little one keeps on eating. The girl begins to cry. She says that she too has fainted of hunger today. We leave only after her bowl is empty. On our way out those in isolation ask us again to go into the dark room, where the despair is the gravest.
We enter. No [day]light. Darkness. A candle is burning in the centre of the large room. Shadows surround us.
They stretch out their bowls and pots towards us.
This round is tragic. The amount of soup we have for distribution does not satisfy their hunger. On the contrary, it irritates them.
[43] A line of people follows us. They are asking for a little bit more soup.
Unfortunately, we have to distribute it among everybody, not to satiate them but to keep them alive.
People’s health deteriorates due to hunger and exhaustion.
In order to make life easier for those in isolation, the Care Section purchased bread and sold it for the price of purchase.
“Amount of bread: 39 kg for 2.10 zlotys, 18 kg for 2.30, and 26 kg for 2.60. The rest of the bread was sold to those in isolation who did not have food coupons.”
Today we distributed 35 loaves of bread with marmalade and coffee. We [44] distributed cream of wheat among the children. No deportees.
Afternoon shift.
We have not received any refugee transports for ten days. We are still on duty.
