An ambulance is parked outside the quarantine. The sick and elderly are being removed. An old man, barefoot, is being escorted. The attendants say that his daughter took [50] his shoes thinking that he would die. It would be a pity to waste a pair of shoes.
Our office. Some parcels. An Aryan has sent us some medications, cotton, and bandages. He offered help in the future. He said he would give us whatever we need.
We are touched. We feel so little warmth from the other side that we are moved by every such response. We have no bread today. We have only cream of wheat, which we cook for the children.
We return home earlier. On the way we encounter a man who provides food to us on behalf of the self-help institutions. He says that there is some bread, but the guards at the ghetto walls do not want to let it through. [51] So those in isolation will not receive any bread. There are already over 600 of them.
With time, for reasons unknown to me, the Care Section stopped selling bread to those in isolation.
Those in isolation are refugees from the provinces who ended up in the centres after expulsion from their hometowns. As they often fell ill, their number was kept up by former deportees.
Today there are 622 people in isolation in the quarantine, mostly refugees. A decision was made on 13 March of this year at a conference of the Central Commission for Care Section282 [52] to provide extra food to those isolated in the quarantine. 2 litres of milk were purchased. 5 kg of cream of wheat cooked with milk and sugar were distributed among the children. 66 kg of bread and 5 kg of marmalade were distributed for dinner among those in isolation.
