The pool was split as follows: the Poles took 60 % of the total amount, and the Jews shared the rest among themselves; still, however, the earnings were higher, because the Poles were much more ruthless—they charged people, for example, for having untrimmed beards! Dr. Dyczkowski and Dr. Janicki were responsible for assigning tenement houses. Often, therefore, an auction of sorts was held: the brigade that bid the highest would get the most [. . .] houses.

Aside from the brigades, the police escort also extorts money from steamings. In addition to the fee for allowing people in or out of the entrance gate, they take money from tenement residents for releasing them from the obligatory bath. There is no interaction between the column and the police escort.
