him, that he would not get money for the goods he sent, that he would be cheated or robbed by a Polish collector, tram driver, or a policeman with free access to the ghetto. All these obstacles, however, could not prevent the need to earn money, a need that was counteracted and stronger than any prospective losses.

Locked up in the ghetto, the Jewish merchant and craftsman had to do something to stay alive. The Polish entrepreneur, for whom the sky was the limit, had to use Jewish labour to make a profit. The Jew was indeed exploited in all areas; however, his resourcefulness allowed him to overcome all obstacles and walls. He worked at a loss, but kept his head above water, proving with his very existence that the position of the Jews had not been completely eliminated from the economic life of Rump Poland.
