for Raduń421 on back roads, in order to avoid Ejszyszki. Needless to say, we followed the second suggestion. Since we didn’t know the way, we proposed to the peasant that he drive us to Raduń, bypassing Ejszyszki, and we would pay him for his trouble. We reached an agreement with him. For 500 roubles he was willing to be our guide and driver.

We set off the next night. The peasant drove us all night through fields, woods, and streams. We went at a gallop, not stopping for a minute. He took us to within 7 kilometres of Raduń. The peasant returned home, and my friend and I went into the woods to wait until [35a] daybreak. By law people could not be out at night.

When day began to break, we set off for the shtetl. By early morning we had arrived at the Judenrat, where we were received in an extremely friendly manner. We were taken to the home of a Jew where we could wash, and we were given the very best food and drink as well as fine beds. We stayed there two days and rested well. When we left, our hosts gave us provisions for the trip, and the Judenrat gave us 100 roubles.

The Jews of Raduń live in fear of being expelled, as has happened to the Jews in neighbouring shtetls. From Raduń we went to Zabłocie,422 where we found no Jews because they had all been driven out.

We left for Ostryna423 and from there we went on to [36] Skidel.424
