Gush Etzion,479 with representatives of all parties from left to right. Working closely [54] with them was deputy police chief Glazman,480 who risked his own head and issued pink certificates to those without Scheins, thus saving them from death. The management of Gush Etzion also arranged for the Supply Department to provide food and free meals for young people. Together, everyone made efforts to arrange for some of the young people to leave the ghetto and settle outside as Aryans, obtaining Aryan documents for them (with the help of Poles), finding them accommodation, and arranging employment. Thus, a reserve of people was created, to wait out the storm. For example, a friend of mine from Vilna is currently outside the ghetto posing as an Aryan woman, working for a Polish family. Efforts were also made to make contact with places where Jews fared relatively better, such as Lida, Białystok, Grodno, and Warsaw, in order to send those who were particularly at riskthere. As a result of a number of such initiatives, dozens of people have been sent from the ghetto.481

Communication between the ghetto and the authorities has been maintained [55] via special liaisons. Jews are not allowed to leave the ghetto indi-vidually, only in groups of workers, to their respective work details and back. Any contact with Aryans is prohibited. Regarding the attitude of Poles towards the Jews, it has become very agreeable lately. Many Poles have acted according to the suggestions of the government-in-exile and helped the Jews; many have also changed their attitude out of compassion. That more positive attitude manifested itself in the fact that Poles helped Jews to settle outside the ghetto, hiding them, selling them food without any profit, arranging Aryandocuments for them, and so on. 2 March 1942
