[9] I go onto some stairs, where various people are walking up and down. I put on my armband and leave the gate. I have the impression that the entire street is shouting. I am slowly beginning to discern the voices. “Cheap bread! Cheap bread! Cheap bread!” “Jews, save me! Don’t let me die of hunger!” A scratched Jewish tram rolls along the grating rails. There are enormous, fat lice walking on the walls with a rhymed propaganda slogan of an anti-typhus poster. Between carts with swedes and potatoes there is a pushcart with a corpse whose limb ends have gone greenish. Posters on the walls, “Due to crossing of the ghetto border the following people were sentenced to death…”. Eight surnames follow, including three women. I hurry home. Tears, joy. My mother and brother are dead. Typhus, tuberculosis …

I send for my suitcase and they bring it after an hour. I open it and on the bottom there are … two stones wrapped in rags …
