Table 1, which shows payments to the team’s co-workers, should be
approached with considerable caution. Most of the workers (for instance,
Bernard Kam pelmacher, Natan Koninski, and Mordecai Schwartzbard)
received nominal sums of money which did not reflect the amount of work
they carried out. At the same time many active members of the team (for
example, Rachel Auerbach and Blume Wasser) cannot be found among the
recipients of remuneration from Oyneg Shabes. The relatively substantial
remuneration paid out to Wasser or Ringelblum surely resulted from the additional
duties they performed as Oyneg Shabes administrators. It is particularly
clear in the case of Wasser, who was not only in charge of cataloguing,
but also carried out other duties such as obtaining stationery products for
the team: writing paper, copying paper, carbon, and so on. He also distributed
small sums of money, perhaps to people who gave interviews or whose
testimony was recorded.
Even less is known about the money paid into Oyneg Shabes’s purse
(table 2) than about the team’s expenses. Some sources of the financing
of Ringelblum’s workers remain unknown. The secrecy principle had to
be particularly adhered to in that sphere, so it might be surprising to find
that the cashbook reveals any surnames at all. The number of more substantial
donations for the team’s activity is relatively small. The two most
generous donors were Shmuel Winter and a mysterious institution –
