constant deportations of the Jewish population to Treblinka or other execution
sites and about local massacres comes from every direction – from Vilna,
Białystok, Sandomierz, Lvov, Opoczno, Radom, and Częstochowa. This intensifies
the horrible, primeval fear seen in the eyes of all ghetto residents.
Regardless of the said ghetto “themes”, and rather simultaneously, the
Warsaw ghetto is going through a drama rooted on the one hand in the conviction
that the German thugs will not leave the ghetto and the rest of its residents
intact, and on the other hand, feeling desperate, which is manifest in
hopeless heroism. Not looking for an analogy in other periods of barbarity
and savagery throughout history, we would like to stress a highly characteristic
and telling symptom, which is seen in the Jewish district in Warsaw. We
provide a short digression before getting to the heart of the matter, which is
the new German propaganda campaign against Jews, which has already been
signalled. It has been even further developed this week and is being conducted
on a broad scale, albeit discreetly.
The law of the jungle – the primal law of the backwoods and primeval
forests – states as follows: devouring a victim to satisfy physical hunger, the
entire struggle for survival, for life, expressed even in the most drastic form,
with the use of fangs, claws, and talons is natural and as such is neither concealed
nor denied. A conflict in which everything, that is, life is at stake,
continues with full heat and fury. But the law of the jungle does not accept
death merely for the sake of the idea of death. On the contrary, it is guided by
the overwhelming instinct of survival. Even the fiercest beast does not murder
without need. Satisfaction of hunger is enough for it to refrain from searching
for new prey. And one more thing – no animal covers the traces of struggle
afterwards, be it a defeat or a victory. It acts in accord with the law of the jungle.
This has been said to better comprehend the German “idea” of war
against nations. By contrast, the law of the jungle seems like a baby’s babbling
compared to a roar of rollers, a light touch of the zephyr compared to
the roar of the gale. For the two are separated by wantonness of thought,
unleashed fury, sophisticated sadism, deep moral corruption and perfection
