4,000 Jews, mostly elderly, were assembled and arranged in such a way
that cars transporting singing Ukrainians were moving in front of them,
while cars with armed Germans were moving behind them. All the Jews from
that group were “liquidated” out of town.
[38] The fourth pogrom period was in March of this year, held under the
pretence of resettlement and deportation to a camp. The macabre reached
its zenith. The Germans set in motion the entire machinery of sophisticated
mental and physical tortures, beginning with forcing all clerks of the Judenrat
to capture their brothers and sisters and ending with the torturing of the
assembled Jewish victims. Many families were separated – wives, children,
and parents were sent into the unknown. A total of 10,000 men, women and
children were loaded into boxcars and deported in an unknown direction, as
far as is known to the infamous murder site in Bełżec.
The Ausrottung has taken a toll of more than 26,000 Jews in Lvov.⁸⁹⁹
