to wear an individual number or a card pinned to the chest as a sign of being
assigned to a legal work detail. The people who don’t have such numerals are
either sent to the Umschlagplatz or are executed on the spot. According to
the mortality table for the month of September, the total number of deaths
was 4,444, including 3,158 resulting from gunshot wounds, 69 suicides, and
1,217 deaths from natural causes.
The number of deaths resulting from gunshot wounds:
from 1 to 15 September – 94.3 per cent
between 16 and 30 September – 5.7 per cent.
The average daily number of deaths resulting from gunshot wounds:
from 1 to 15 September – 198.5
between 16 and 30 September – 12.0
from 1 to 30 September – 105.2
Between 1 and 31 October the number of deaths resulting from gunshot
wounds was 58 of the total number of deaths amounting to 423.
According to official statistics, the workshops employ up to 26,000 people,
or nearly [. . .] per cent of the entire population. The remainder (2,797) are
employed in the Judenrat and on various German details located outside the
ghetto.
The German authorities have retained the Judenrat with all of its subordinate
structures, but there has been a significant reduction of the scope
of its operation and its ability to act. The legal status of the Judenrat and
the ghetto remain unregulated. The stabilisation is shaky. There is the
constant threat of a new “resettlement”, as during 9–12 November, when
some tailoring and shoemaking workshops were ordered to deliver quotas
of people. The Germans claim that the unprepared craftsmen were sent
towards Lublin.
There are very loose contacts between the German authorities and
the Judenrat. This contact did not exist during the “resettlement” period,
when the civil administration and the ghetto commissioner Auerswald were
obliged to step aside and let the SS-men from Einsatz Reinhardt operate. It has
recently even been rumoured that the SS-men became interested [33] in the
operation of the Community⁹⁶⁷ in various areas, particularly in the sphere of
child care, and that one of them (Brandt?) purportedly ordered the Community
