is but an excerpt of the actual list of towns subjected to the “resettlement
campaign”.
The Warsaw reptile press⁹⁷⁷ – Nowy Kurier Warszawski⁹⁷⁸ 262, 5 November
1942 – published the following text: “The establishment of Jewish residential
quarters in the Warsaw and Lublin districts. The police ordinance regarding
the establishment of Jewish residential quarters in the Warsaw and Lublin
districts (Journal of General Government Ordinances No. 94, p. 665) came into
effect on 1 November this year. By virtue of this ordinance Jewish residential
quarters are to be established in the following towns and village communes.
Warsaw District: Warsaw – city (ghetto), Kałuszyn (Mińsk County
administration), Sobolew (Garwolin County administration), Kosów (Sokołów
County administration), Rembertów (Warsaw-Wieś⁹⁷⁹ County administration),
and Siedlce (Siedlce County administration).
Lublin District: Łuków, Parczew, Międzyrzec (Radzyń County administration),
Włodawa (Chełm County administration), Końskowola (Puławy
County administration), Piaski (Lublin-Wieś County administration), Zakli
ków (Kraśnik County administration), and Izbica (Krasnystaw County
administration).
All Jews as defined by the ordinance regarding the 24 July 1940 definition
of the word Jew (Journal of General Government Ordinances No. 1, p. 231) in
the General Government are obliged to choose a place of residence in one of the
enumerated Jewish residential quarters in the Warsaw or Lublin districts by
30 November 1942. All other people must leave the Jewish residential quarters
by this date unless they receive police permission to stay. Further details will
be specified by means of an ordinance issued by the relevant district governor.
Beginning on 1 December this year no Jew in the Warsaw and Lublin
Districts may stay outside a Jewish residential quarter or leave it without
permission from the police. Moreover, other people are allowed to stay in
