LEWARTOWSKI-FINKIELSZTAJN Józef (Aron) (1895–1942) – communist
politician and social activist; co-founder and leader of the Anti-fascist Bloc in
the ghetto; one of the initiators of the Jewish resistance movement. Murdered
by the Gestapo.

LEWIN Abraham (1893–1943) – pre-war teacher of Hebrew in the Yehudiyah
Girls’ Secondary School in Warsaw, author of a book titled Kantonistn (Warsaw,
1934); close collaborator of Oyneg Shabes, author of a diary kept between March
1942 and January 1943, one of the most active copyists of the Archive. He was
murdered in January 1943.

LEWIN Gershon (1868–1939) – physician, publicist writing in Yiddish,
Hebrew, and Polish, ward head in the hospital on Czyste Street, TOZ chairman,
cofounder of the Briyus anti-tuberculosis association, author of several
memoirs.

LICHTENBAUM Marek (1876–1943) – engineer, pre-war member of Jewish
Community Board; from 1939 vice-president and leader of the Department of
Economy in the Warsaw Judenrat; chairman of the Judenrat from 23 July 1942.
Shot on the Umschlagplatz during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

LICHTENSTEIN Israel (1904–1943) – teacher, Left Poalei Tsiyon activist, prewar
editor of Literarishe Bleter, married to the painter Gele Sekstein. He was
responsible for concealing the Oyneg Shabes materials, which he did together
with his students Nahum Grzywacz and David Graber in early August 1942
under the basement of the Borokhov School at Nowolipki Street 68 where he
taught.

LINDER Menakhem (1911–1942) – lawyer, Jan Kazimierz University (now
Lviv University) graduate, YIVO researcher in Vilna and Warsaw. Activist for
Yiddish language and literature. During the German occupation active in the
ŻSS and Oyneg Shabes, founder of YIKOR, author of statistical studies prepared
for the ŻSS; he kept a diary, which was destroyed by his wife after he
was murdered on 17 April 1942.
