SHAPIRO Kalonymus Kalmish (1889–1943) – the Piaseczno rebbe, charismatic
preacher, author of a collection of sermons from the Warsaw ghetto preserved
in the Oyneg Shabes Archive.

SIEGFRIED Józef (dates unknown) – economist and doctor of law, from
November 1940 member of the Lublin Judenrat, in charge of human resources
and the Health Commission.

SŁAPAKOWA Cecylia (Luba) (?–1942) – native of Vilna, she was a literary
critic and translator (together with Sophie Erlich) of Simon Dubnow’s History
of the Jews in Poland and Russia into Polish. For Oyneg Shabes she worked on
the topic “The Jewish Woman during the Second World War”. She was murdered
at Treblinka death camp.

SMOLAR Natan (1901–1943) – born in Zambrów, graduated from a teacher-
training college in Vilna, during the interwar period he taught Yiddish
in the Borokhov School at Nowolipki 68 where he served as headmaster in
the ghetto. Editor of school textbooks, submitted several materials to Oyneg
Shabes.

STARZYŃSKI Stefan (1893–1944) – politician, member of Parliament and senator
before WWII, mayor of Warsaw 1934–1939, in September 1939 he was made
civilian commissioner by the Head of Warsaw Defence. Perished in Dachau.

STAWSKA (?–1942) – sociologist, ŻSS employee in the Warsaw ghetto.

STEIN Józef (1904–1943) – director of the hospital on Czyste Street, member
of the Health Council (Rada Zdrowia) of the Judenrat, medical courses lecturer
in the ghetto, member of the team doing research on hunger disease, murdered
at Treblinka death camp.

STEIN Menakhem (Edmund) (1893–1943) – historian of the Hellenistic period,
staff member of the Institute of Judaic Studies in Warsaw where he taught
Midrashic literature; he worked for Keren Kayemet Leisrael; he was vice-chairman
of the Union of Hebrew Writers and Journalists in Poland. In the Warsaw
ghetto he worked in the Judenrat, participated in events organised by Zionist
