SZTERNFELD Dawid (?–1943) – owner of one of several companies permitted
to trade with companies outside the ghetto, a commandant of the “Thirteen”,
collaborator with the Gestapo in the ghetto and after its destruction; executed
by the Germans.

SZTERN Israel (?–1942?) – poet, essayist, author of the collection Pieśni
szpitalne [hospital songs], Hasid, YIKOR activist in the ghetto, murdered at
Treblinka death camp.

SZTERNBERG Nachum (?–1942) – poet, murdered during the summer 1942
Aktion in the Warsaw ghetto.

SZTOLCMAN Abram (Adolf) (1890–1943) – engineer, trader, businessman,
member of the Judenrat, member of ŻKOM, after 15 August 1942 the chairman
of the Economic Department of the Judenrat, executed by the Germans
during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

SZYMEL Maurycy (Moshe) (1903–1942) – poet, prosaist, journalist writing in
Yiddish and Polish, associated with Nasz Przegląd, Chwila, Opinia, and Haynt,
translator from Yiddish into Polish; in 1939 lived in Warsaw, later fled to Lvov,
worked in the Judenrat in Lvov, died in the camp on Janowska Street.

TAUBER Mayer (1880–1942) – received a PhD in philosophy in Vienna; before
WWII he was a director of the State College for Teachers of Jewish Religion
in Warsaw and wrote textbooks in Polish and Hebrew; he also taught at the
Institute for Judaic Studies. In the Warsaw ghetto he was active in Hebrew
cultural organisations.

TÖBBENS Walther Caspar (1909-1954) – industrialist from Bremen, he established plants (shops) in the Warsaw ghetto to supply the Wehrmacht. Before
the Aktion of summer 1942 several hundred ghetto inmates were employed in
these shops. Due to the conviction that they were excluded from deportation,
the number of workers increased dramatically during the Aktion. However,
eventually they were transported to the forced labour camp in Poniatowa and
murdered in November 1943 in the Aktion Erntefest.
