Glossary 1 – General Terms and Organisations
AGUDAT ISRAEL, political party organizing observant Jews, set up in 1912 in Upper Silesia.
AMERICAN-JEWISH JOINT DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE (AJDC), colloquially known as “the Joint” – a Jewish charity organisation founded in 1914. The Joint operated in the Warsaw ghetto legally until the United States entered the war in December 1941, and later clandestinely. AJDC provided food and financial aid to the ghetto, as well as supported the underground resistance.
ARMBAND – the white armband with a blue Star of David, which, following the
Decree of Governor General Hans Frank, all Jews in the General Government over
12 years of age had to wear as of 1 December 1939. In the areas incorporated directly into the Third Reich and in Wartheland, Jews had to wear yellow stars sewn onto their clothes.
“ARYAN” SIDE – term used by the German authorities for the part of Warsaw which was outside the ghetto. The term was also commonly used by Jews.
BUND (Yiddish: Algemeyner Yidisher Arbeter Bund in Lite, Poyln un Rusland, The
General Jewish Labour Union of Lithuania, Poland, and Russia) – the Jewish socialist party operating in Poland from World War I until 1948. The Bund promoted the cultural sovereignty of Jews in Poland, rejecting Zionism. In the Warsaw ghetto, the Bund
