YAMIM NORAIM (Hebrew, days of awe) — The High Holy Days, from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur.


YESHIVA (Hebrew, lit. sitting, attending) — Jewish religious school for cheder or Talmud Torah graduates above the age of 13 and not married.


YOM KIPPUR (Hebrew, Day of Atonement) — day of fasting and prayer on the 10th day of Tishrei, concluding the Yamim Noraim; in Poland often called a Day of Judgement (Sądny Dzień).


Z.L. (Hebrew, abbr. zikhrono livracha) — of blessed memory.


Z.TZ.L. (Hebrew, abbr. zecher tzaddik livracha) — may the memory of the righteous be a blessing; the traditional honorific for the dead when speaking of a rabbi or other righteous person.
