Here we don’t have tenants and subtenants; everyone is a tenant and pays the
kehillah. The kehillah doesn’t manage to collect rent and does nothing about it.
Since 20 September, every unemployed person has received benefit of 7 marks
for children up to 14 years of age, people aged 14 to 60 receive 9 marks, and
the over-60s get 10 marks a month. People who receive benefits are exempt
from paying rent. There are approximately 5,000 Jews working in the kehillah,
and they are doing very well.

611 Outgoing correspondence from the Łódź ghetto had to be written in German. Letters and postcards in other languages were destroyed. Correspondence written incorrectly and in a messy way was withheld. To convey personal information or information blocked by the German censorship, the authors used a secret coded language. Cf. letters in the ghetto — S. Rozensztajn, Notatnik, p. 220.
