cost¹³³⁷ will be covered by the Jewish fund obtained from requisitioned property.
Two years ago, a wooden barrack was built outside Gdańsk. It was very
primitive and at my persistent request it was sold again.
Due to my efforts, eight chests with the belongings of people who had
been transported to Warsaw in February were sent to Warsaw in March
this year. They safely reached the city, and their contents were given to the
above-mentioned people.
Anticipating your interest in this issue, I would also like to inform you
that in March and April 1941, the members of our Judenrat sent many parcels
to Warsaw. 240 of them were requisitioned by the Customs Enforcement
Bureau. Criminal proceedings are to be initiated against several people. Being
the chairman of the Judenrat, I made efforts, through the Foreign Exchange
Office (Devisenstelle), to discontinue the proceedings and after 12 months of
negotiations, they were discontinued on the 15th of last month. I have already
paid 1,920 RM — for 240 parcels. The sum was covered by the members of
our Judenrat, who will pay it off in monthly instalments. At the moment, it is
completely impossible to send anything to the General Government, as it will
again violate foreign exchange regulations.
We are still receiving very bad news from Warsaw. I have presented to
the local authorities that, in comparison to the situation of Jews in Gdańsk, the
situation of the Warsaw Jews is miserable. Wanting to write a report on this
matter, I have asked the former members of our Judenrat who are now in
Warsaw to provide me with more detailed information. As they have been
afraid to tell the truth, I cannot finish my report.
I am preparing the statistics on the Jewish population in Gdańsk and
when they are ready, I will tell you a thing or two.
Please find enclosed the population statistics, which the Association of
Jews in Germany sends me every month.
It is a pity that you, my dear friend, cannot give me information regarding
your activity in Gdańsk at that time and your return to Poland. Do you have
any notes on this? They will be extremely useful for preparing my statistics.
How long did you work here at the commission of the Joint? My predecessors
did not pay much attention to preparing statistics. The registers of
names are quite incomplete.
