the 70 were sent with their luggage we do not know to this day. Despite various
efforts, there is no news of them.
On 10 November 1939 the whole Jewish population was summoned to
assemble outside the municipality building, where they were informed that
they must leave town within a few hours and were allowed to travel only to
Warsaw. The town had to pay an appropriate levy, such as gold and silver, and
most people were not allowed to go home from the square. Everyone, even the
richest residents of our town, left their homes carrying a small piece of hand
luggage. Obviously, most people went on foot. Some people died on the way.
The seriously ill were left behind in the town. We do not know [3] what happened
to them, but according to what we have heard — nothing good.
It can be said that our town was not an exception from all other towns,
since people left it naked and barefoot and without money to live. The majority,
around 800 persons, are now living in Warsaw in very difficult circumstances.
Those who in our town were the wealthiest householders can today
be said to be starving to death. A total of 400 people from our town were
deported, and we do not know to this day what has become of them. According
to the most recent news from our town, the smaller Jewish houses have been
demolished, as well as the cemetery fence and prayer houses. This is the news
we have to date. We call — and it is in the interest of the Jewish population
as a whole — for an energetic intervention to find out where the above-mentioned
400 people in the first and second groups have ended up. The cries for
help from the desperate families remaining in Warsaw are terrible.
